Life Skills and Education Programs

What Do You Learn in a Life Skills Program?

Our life skills program assists those who are struggling with developing or maintaining life skills that are critical to their daily lives and interactions.

Among the skills that we focus on include:

  • Ability to maintain relationships
  • Maintaining employment
  • Staying physically and psychologically healthy/fit
  • Using effective coping skills
  • Improved decision-making
  • Finding a safe and appropriate residence

For an individual recovering from an addiction, implementing these skills their lives can be overwhelming. Among the most common life skills with which those in recovery struggle include some of the most basic, daily responsibilities, such as the following:

Setting a Schedule

When someone is addicted to drugs or alcohol, he or she is probably unconcerned about adhering to a set schedule – instead, days and nights more likely structured around drug or alcohol use. So, as a person gets sober, he or she may not know how to develop or effectively execute a daily schedule.

Our program can help these individuals learn how to make a set schedule, however, such as waking up and going to sleep at appointed times and incorporating activities such as exercising and hobbies into his or her routine.

Maintaining Good Health

Personal hygiene is among the first things to be neglected by someone who has developed an addiction. In addition, a person is more likely to eat poorly when using addictive substances, and this may adversely affect their physical health. During recovery, an individual can learn how to employ and maintain healthy hygiene and diet practices into their everyday life while also appreciating the benefits of doing so.

Attending to Responsibilities

Addiction can cause those suffering to become very consumed with themselves and their needs. As a result, many responsibilities that he or she once had are often neglected or deprioritized due to addiction. Being sober, however, can help individuals understand the importance of upholding responsibilities, such as taking out the trash, doing the dishes, and meeting work or school deadlines.

Education Workshops

Harmony Treatment and Wellness Center works to educate clients and their families so that they can have a stronger understanding of addiction and recovery.

One of the most critical education workshops usually offered in addiction treatment is one that identifies and discusses addiction as a disease. During this workshop, those who are in recovery from addiction can learn why they engage in the behavior that they do, the factors that are propelling their addiction, and how they can better manage it. When families visit, they can also participate in this workshop as it is beneficial for everyone who is impacted by addiction.

Other educational workshops focus on dual diagnosis, family dynamics, and 12-step programs. Through these applications, our clients will learn how to move forward in their recovery and can also educate themselves on the condition/disease that has tormented their lives for so long.
